India Data Capacity Accelerator
Driving data talent at the intersection of climate and health
Made possible by funding from Wellcome, data.org launched the India Data Capacity Accelerator to catalyze the application of data to address systemic challenges at the intersection of climate and health – including the critical need to build capacity. In partnership with J-PAL South Asia and three leading university partners, the India Accelerator will produce a cohort of purpose-driven data practitioners with interdisciplinary subject-matter expertise in climate and health data with a key focus on inclusion, diversity, equity, and accessibility (IDEA) and intersectionality to effectively drive social impact. Additionally, through one-year fellowship placements, practitioners will have the opportunity to advance their skills through experiential learning with social sector organizations and tackle real-world problems.
- 13 of the 20 cities at the highest risk of environmental harm are in India, with Delhi ranking as the second most vulnerable city to climate change.
- More than four in ten people live in areas “highly vulnerable” to climate change and already experiencing the effects on public health.
- The World Health Organization estimates climate change is expected to cause approximately 250,000 additional deaths per year between 2030 and 2050.
Much like data.org, Ashoka emphasizes nurturing leaders committed to addressing systemic social challenges, interdisciplinary approaches to solving global problems in its curricula, and inclusion and diversity in its student body.
